Title: The New World Disorder

 

Speakers: Willene Jones Johnson, Bill Overholt, Dan Orlovsky (by zoom)

Summary of Session: Global conflict and issues have evolved in frightening new ways as the post World War II structures and Cold War “victory” have lost their meaning. Our panel will discuss the current challenges in Africa, China and Ukraine/Russia and their complex interconnections.

Title: Keep Your Cool in a Changing Climate

Speakers: Lee Anne Willson and Richard Hopkins

Summary of Session: A conversation between an astronomer and an epidemiologist both engaged in local climate action work.  What is our understanding of the causes of climate change? What are some strategies to prevent the worst outcomes for the generations to come? How do humans deal with very large but slow-moving threats to their health and security? What can we learn from public health successes and challenges?  Why is local action both difficult and vital to reduce climate change?

Title:  And we thought we had figured it out in 1968---- our generation's experiments with domestic politics

Summary: -What went wrong, and how do we get out of this?  What have we lost; what do we need to recapture; what new ways of thinking do we need to accommodate as Americans?

Speaker: Marshall Goldberg

Summary of Session: Marshall Goldberg’s introduction to his forthcoming HBO series on the criminal justice system centered on the actual experiences of arrestees in the Nashville criminal justice system.

NOTE that while the other events are in the Science Center, this one is at the Yenching Auditorium in Yenching Library not more than three minutes away (source: Google Maps).

Title: Understory, a Memoir Workshop (limited to 12 participants)

Instructor: Ellen Waterston

Summary: In this writing workshop on memoir, short readings and generative prompts will be used

to address themes and/or events that could inform the development of a longer work.

Discussion will include reflections on and approaches to writing memoir as well as

suggestions for proceeding on your own following the workshop.

Title: Talking with the Enemy

Facilitator: Anne Fowler

Summary: After the 1994 killings of two Planned Parenthood staffers in Boston, 3 “ Pro-Choice” and 3 “Pro-Life” leaders were selected to participate in a dialogue which lasted for 6 years.  Anne will base this session on her experience with Abortion Dialogues- showing how 6 people found respect despite disagreement and use this as a template for the difficult discussions we face on a daily basis.

Title: Music in Our Lives: A Conversation

Facilitator: Confirmed amateurs Vince Canzoneri and Todd Boli will recognize your upraised hands. 

Summary: What might you like us all to know about music in your life - before, during and after Harvard?  Church choirs and community theaters/orchestras, professional gigs, performing or practicing alone, struggles with inner critics/health issues?  Guitars/Suzuki grandkids/iPhones?
