Radcliffe '68

Explore below the letter to Radcliffe Classmates for things to do and places to go that are of special interest to you.

Dear Radcliffe Classmates,

The Harvard Radcliffe Class of 1968 Reunion Committee continues planning for our upcoming reunion, with all the programs, fun and friendship we’ve come to expect. At the same time, we want to share some special opportunities that Radcliffe women will have to connect with each other during our milestone 50th reunion.

First, the Radcliffe Room, in Leverett House, will be a place where we can go to rest, refresh and talk with old friends and new throughout the reunion. No schedule, no agenda, just a place to call our own.

As always, there will be the regular Monday afternoon Radcliffe Meeting, facilitated this year by Professor Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, 300th Anniversary University Professor, author of Yards and Gates: Gender in Harvard and Radcliffe History, and of course the annual Radcliffe Day celebration held Friday. In addition, Radcliffe classmates will continue leading roles in all HR Reunion symposia and panels, as moderators, panelists, or hosts.

New this year, classmates will be leading several non-traditional women-only programs. These activities will be held in Underground 68, a “coffee house” in Leverett House, and will include communal mural painting with Christina Schlesinger; a collaborative theater workshop with Susannah Wood; and an intergenerational discussion in which we can reflect about our time at Radcliffe and how that compares to the experience of recent graduates.

Learn specifics as they are updated on our class website, 1968.classes.harvard.edu. But the main point is this: more than half a century ago we were admitted to Radcliffe College. We lived at Radcliffe. We ate at Radcliffe. We made some of our dearest friends at Radcliffe. And our experience was clearly not that of our male classmates at Harvard. Surely this is the time to renew those friendships, to look back at our time at Radcliffe, and to leave with strengthened connections.

Looking forward to having you join us in Cambridge this Spring beginning May 21 and ending with Radcliffe Day on Friday, May 25, 2018.

RADCLIFFE DAY

Friday, 10:30 to 2:00

Location TBD

Radcliffe Day celebrates our past, present and future with hundreds of guests in Radcliffe Yard. The day starts with a panel discussion and moves on to a luncheon and awarding of Radcliffe medals.

On Radcliffe Day 2018—Friday, May 25—the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study will honor Hillary Rodham Clinton as the 2018 Radcliffe Medalist. We recognize Secretary Clinton for working tirelessly over the course of decades in the public eye—as an attorney, a first lady, a senator, a secretary of state, and the first woman nominated by a major party for the US presidency—to make meaningful change, often under unprecedented scrutiny. Radcliffe Day will feature a personal tribute to Secretary Clinton delivered by the global affairs trailblazer, former secretary of state, and 2001 Radcliffe Medalist Madeleine Albright and a wide-ranging keynote conversation between Secretary Clinton and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey ’92.

The day’s program will open with a panel titled “Toward a New Global Architecture? America’s Role in a Changing World.” In 2009, then–Secretary of State Clinton outlined a vision for a global architecture “in which states have clear incentives to cooperate and live up to their responsibilities, as well as strong disincentives to sit on the sidelines or sow discord and division.” Nearly a decade later, the United States is still grappling with complex questions about its role in global affairs. Professor Nicholas Burns of Harvard Kennedy School will moderate a discussion exploring these issues with the foreign policy experts Michèle Flournoy ’83, David Ignatius ’72, Meghan O'Sullivan, and Anne-Marie Slaughter JD ’85.

Honoring Secretary Clinton this year holds special significance for Radcliffe. Not only does 2018 mark the 75th anniversary of Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, but we are also in the midst of a two-year exploration of citizenship, which anticipates the centennial of women’s suffrage in 2020. Finally, Radcliffe Day 2018 is an opportunity to celebrate The Radcliffe Campaign, Invest in Ideas, and the generous supporters who make the Institute’s work possible.

Attending Radcliffe Day

We anticipate a record turnout at Radcliffe Day 2018, and you are among a select number of people to receive an invitation in recognition of your deep connection to Radcliffe as an alumna. A formal invitation has been mailed to you. To RSVP, return the reply card included with your invitation no later than April 6, 2018.

An Important Note about Logistics

In order to accommodate as many people as possible, we will host guests in two tents, one in Radcliffe Yard and one in Greenleaf Yard. Unlike past Radcliffe Day celebrations, guests will remain in their assigned yard for the duration of the event. The day’s program will take place in Radcliffe Yard and will be simulcast for our Greenleaf Yard guests on a large video display screen. You are invited to join us in Radcliffe Yard.

Regrettably, we cannot guarantee that all invited guests who respond by the April 6deadline can be accommodated. We urge you to RSVP promptly. We will make every effort to accommodate those who RSVP by the deadline, but we expect that interest may exceed capacity. For those unable to join us in Cambridge, we invite you to view the event online live. Please note that Radcliffe Day is a ticketed event and your invitation is not transferable.
